Coal Mill Installation at LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited (LHBL) Surma Plant

Project Details

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited (LHBL), an integrated dry process Cement Manufacturing Plant of cement production capacity of 1.7 million tons per annum (million TPA) at Noarai, Chhatak, Sunamganj, Bangladesh, intends to set up a Vertical Coal Mill of 40 tons per hour (TPH) capacity and a covered coal storage shed of 16,000 tons capacity within the existing Surma Cement Plant premises. The mill will be compatible to grind coal.

At present, the fuel for the LHBL cement plant is natural gas. About 12.3 MMSCFT natural gas is being used daily for its clinker production. Historically, Bangladesh was predominantly dependent on natural gas for its energy. With no significant discoveries in the current century, and with soaring demand, the current supply lacks demand, which the government is filling the demand by importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and supplying through the national grid. In near future, there may be a scarcity of natural gas in Bangladesh to supply for industrial usage or the gas price may increase at such a level that it would be unprofitable to run the plant with the increased price of the natural gas. In view of the above to continue the plant operation in case natural gas is not available, LHBL is planning to use coal / pet coke as the fuel alternative to natural gas.

The daily requirement of coal will be around 700 tons for operating the plant which may vary slightly based on the calorific value of the coal/pet coke. LHBL will procure the coal/pet coke from the authorized coal importers in Bangladesh and will receive it through its existing jetty. To use the coal in the burning process it needs to be grinded for getting the heat recovery from the coal. LHBL will install a coal mill to ensure coal grinding at the rate of 40 tons per hour to use in the clinkerization process. The coal mill will be installed inside the existing plant.

After receiving the coal from the authorized vendors, the coal will be stored in covered storage inside the plant premises. The covered coal storage capacity will be approximately 16,000 tons. From the covered storage, the coal will be transported by belt conveyor to its coal mill. Here the coal will be grinded and will be stored in a Silo. From the silo, fine coal will be fed to the calciner burner and the Kiln burner for the clinkerization process.

The process and the coal mill will be designed to grind coal as well as to adopt any future requirements if required.
