Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), with an area of 326 sq.km and a population of over two million is the largest city corporation in Bangladesh. GCC is divided into eight zones, of which Zone 1 (Tongi) and Zone 4 (Gazipur) (“Project Areas”) include urban centers; and the rest of the zones comprise peri-urban areas with low population concentration. All arrangements for sanitation in GCC, including at the household level through sanitary latrines and pit latrines, are undertaken privately. GCC has not, so far, made any provisions for public infrastructure for the management of wastewater or fecal sludge.
With a focus on improving public infrastructure for wastewater management in GCC, a rapid assessment (RA) study was undertaken by WRG 2030. Based on the RA study,
Zone 1 (Tongi) and Zone 4 (Gazipur) were identified as the zones which need immediate interventions (“Project Areas”) and the following interventions/facilities (“Project Components”) were identified for implementation.
- Development of sewage treatment plants (STP) and sewage network, comprising a. 2STPs with a cumulative treatment capacity of 56 MLD b. Sewerage network of 137 km in select areas of GCC (over an identified area of about 10 sq. km)
- Faecal Sludge Management system which would comprise (non-network) faecal sludge removal system in the non-sewered areas; and estimated to include
a. Mechanical desludging of septic tanks in a periodic manner
b. Transportation of sludge to Fecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs)
c. 3 Faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) with a capacity to handle (est.) 477 cubic meters of faecal sludge per day
