Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Ltd. (BAPEX), a company of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (PETROBANGLA) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is the pioneer in the discovery and production of natural gas and mineral oil in the country. The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of independence. In recognition of the long term development challenges, the Government adopted the vision 2021. The vision 2021 and the associated perspective plan 2010-2021.
About 75% of the total commercial energy of the country directly comes from natural gas. At present about 37% of natural gas production is used as fuel for electricity generation. Therefore, the exploration and production activities must be accelerated to support the vision 2021of the government as the present reserve is not sufficient for this purpose. In view of contributing to the development target of the government BAPEX has set its own goal of achievements. Under this goal, BAPEX is to complete drilling of total 108 wells which includes 53 exploratory wells, 35 development wells and 20 work over wells. As part of this plan BAPEX will complete drilling of 36 wells including 23 exploratory well, 23 developments well and 10 workover by the first 1 year i.e. year 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
Rupkalpo-3 drilling project is one of those core projects that are undertaken to meet the development targets of the government by the first two years of the vision 2021. The proposed project area is located at Jamalpur & Brahmanbaria District.
