Dhaka Circular Rail Line

Project Details

Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh and a mega city of south East Asia. This city is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and also one of the busiest cities that serves as the center of political, economic and cultural life of the country. Dhaka has one of the largest population densities in the world with a rapid urban expansion. Around 18 million people live in this mega city. Though the city is expanding every year in terms of area and population but its transportation system has failed to cope with the change. Tremendous traffic congestion has become part and parcel of city life. For this reason every day millions of working hours are lost for the city dwellers. Traffic congestion is eating away the comfort, time, money and life of city dwellers and which makes Dhaka city one of the slow cities in the world. The existing urban transport system has failed to cope with the city development and the rapid population growth resulting extreme traffic congestion has anormal scene in Dhaka, wasting time and affecting the comfort of millions. To minimize the traffic congestion, it is planned to adopt mass rail transit (MRT), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Metro rail and other modern means of transport to relieve urban traffic. The rapid population growth of Dhaka city demands better, comfortable and reliable and cost-effective public transport system. Circular rail could meet this demand in a better and efficient manner if properly design and highlights people’s demand and suggestions in engineering design and fulfilling market needs. People from one corner of the city will be able to travel to other corner without even entering main business corridor of the city. This will reduce unintentional intrusion of people into the busy area of Dhaka city. This will also accelerate easy entry and exit into the suburb and proximity areas of the city of Gazipur, Narayangonj, Keranigonj, Savar and Munshigonj. In the context of above perspective, government has decided to build a circular rail around Dhaka city using mainly flood protection dam, to incorporate Rail Line in the Eastern Bypass. The proposed circular rail-line will use Eastern Bypass as its eastern alignment. Construction of circular rail-line around Dhaka city will not only reduce traffic congestion but also enhance the economic growth saving valuable time of the commuter and building a livable city with reduced cost, time and mobility.
