Proposed Bridge Construction, Rehabilitation and Maintenance Projects

Project Details

The GoB intends to enhance the rural connectivity through construction of new bridges and reconstruction, rehabilitation and maintenance of the existing bridges. The LGED is responsible for 310,000 structures with a total length of 1,870,000m. According to the RSDMS (2015), about 6% structures are longer than 20m of these 38% are yet to be constructed. This study, which is funded under a loan from the WB/IDA, is designed to assist the LGED and GoB with the preparation of an EMF as a long-term plan for the future development of the bridge related projects.

Bridge construction, rehabilitation and maintenance incurs various environmental and social impacts, including both beneficial as well as adverse ones. The LGED intends to prepare this EMF/ESMF based on an overall EA in the area of new bridge construction, rehabilitation and maintenance projects at the preparation stage to ensure that the proposed infrastructure takes environmental concerns into account. The objective of the environmental management of the proposed project is to ensure that, the proposed infrastructure takes into account the environmental concerns in accordance with the ECR, 1997 along with subsequent amendments and international donor policies and guidelines (WB, ADB, JICA, IFC etc.).
