Chatogram tp Cox’s Bazar road is “one-direction one-lane road," "narrow carriageway in urban sections," and "insufficient shoulders." Since the Port of Matarbari which is being constructed is scheduled to open on March 2024. the " Preparatory Survey on the Matarbari Port Development” (2018, JICA) estimated that the travel time from Matarbari Port to Chittagong would increase from 123 minutes in 2017 to 438 minutes in 2035 if N1 would not be improved. As "quality of roads" and "improvement of traffic safety" are essential for the economic growth of the Bangladesh, the improvement of N1 including this project consisting debottlenecking of five major bottlenecks and minor bottlenecks is deemed to be a priority project.
