Project Details
To improve the management and development of priority tourism assets in the southern circuit of Tanzania, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) of the Government of Tanzania (GoT) is going to implement a project entitled “Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth Project (REGROW)” in four priority Protected Areas (PAs) of the Southern Wildlife Area (SWA). The World Bank (WB) is assisting in this project. Under this project, the GoT is keen to develop new tourism products to expand the sector, while maintaining the low-volume high-value approach that has been successful in capturing the highest per capita revenue in the region. A study is commissioned by the GoT highlighted that specifically the Udzungwa National Park (UMNP), Mikumi National Park (MINAPA), Ruaha National Park (RUNAPA), and Nyerere National Park (NYENAPA) are those having the highest, most immediate potential for boosting tourism in the south, increasing jobs and creating spill-over effects. Nyerere National Park Northern Area (Matambwe) is at the core of this project.
Nyerere National Park covers an area of about 30,983 km2 and the REGROW project area in NYENAPA (Matambwe) covers an area of about 4,741 km2. The proposed project consists of infrastructure development i.e., rehabilitation of 792 km of gravel roads, rehabilitation of six airstrips, and construction of building infrastructure for staff and tourist amenities.
