Project Details
In order to contribute toward meeting the growing electricity demand in Bangladesh, the BEPCL has taken an initiative for developing a coal-fired power plant. The capacity of the power plant is 350 MW. To ensued the supply of primary fuel for the proposed power plant a coal transportation and unloading jetty is going to be established as an associated facility under the main power plant. This EIA report is prepared to comply with the 53rd condition of the main power plant EIA study approval letter.
As per the ECR, 1997 and subsequent amendments proposed project falls under the “Red” category project and needs Site Clearance and Environmental Clearance from the DoE, Bangladesh.
Coal for the power plant will be imported from overseas (Indonesia, South Africa and Australia). It will be transported by mother vessel up to the transshipment point in the Bay of Bengal. From the transshipment point coal will be transported using smaller barges along the designated route through the Bay of Bengal and Buriswar-Payra River to the Project jetty. The proposed jetty project is located on the bank of the Buriswar-Payra River. The transshipment area is located about 77 km from the project site jetty and in the Bay of Bengal. The power plant jetty project contains one coal-unloading jetty (including 1 coal-unloading berth of 8,000t & 1 approach bridge) and one heavy cargo jetty (including 1 heavy cargo berth of 3,000t & 1 approach bridge). The length of the coal unloading jetty will be 140 meter and width will be 20 meters. The length of the Heavy Cargo Jetty will be 104 meter and the width will be 30 meters.
