The government initiated the Matarbari Port Development Project (MPDP) due to Chattogram Port’s limited capacity. The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is implementing Phase 1 of MPDP at Dhalghata Union, Moheshkhali Upazila. The detailed design for Phase 1 is complete. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for Phase 1 was conducted and submitted to the Department of Environment (DoE) for approval to obtain the Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC). The DoE issued the ECC on 16 February 2023.
Now, CPA plans to extend MPDP (Phase 1 extension) to accommodate larger container vessels and bulk carriers, easing congestion at Chattogram Port. The extension focuses on expanding port facilities, building new container terminals, dredging channels, and managing dredged materials.
Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. has been appointed as the Matarbari Port Consultant Team (MPCT) for the preparatory survey, detailed design, and project supervision. Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. has engaged EQMS Consulting Limited to provide technical services for updating the existing EIA report, incorporating the Phase 1 extension.
